Sustainable Consulting

Nitsch Engineering specializes in creating sustainable solutions for site development. Led by our in-house LEED® Accredited Professionals, we are prepared to assist with all site aspects of green building projects, including the pursuit of LEED® Certification for your project.

LEED® Standards
The USGBC has developed Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) standards to promote buildings that are built in a sustainable manner and are designed to allow its occupants to live, work, and play in environmentally responsible facilities. Sustainable building design provides environmental and economic benefits, and protects the health and well being of building residents.

LEED® Accredited Professionals are certified experts on the LEED® rating system and LEED® project processes, and have shown an in-depth understanding of green building practices and principles.  Nitsch Engineering’s 25-person civil engineering department has thirteen LEED® Accredited Professionals on staff, including Judith Nitsch, PE, President; Gary Pease, PE, Vice President - Civil Engineering; Sandra A. Brock, PE, Senior Project Manager; Anthony Donato, PE, Project Manager; Nicole Holmes, PE, Project Manager; Cheeta Soga, PE, Project Engineer; Owen Wartella, PE, Project Engineer; Chelsea Christenson, PE, Project Engineer; Erin Venezia Joyce, EIT, Senior Project Designer; Amy LeBlanc, EIT, Project Designer; Matthew DiStefano, EIT, Project Designer; Brahm Driver, EIT, Project Designer; and Michelle DiBenedetto, EIT, Project Designer.

Sustainable Sites
Using principles of biomimicry, ecohydrology, and ecological restoration, Nitsch Engineering creates unique solutions for sites that respect the natural environmental conditions. Nitsch Engineering’s approach results in sites that more closely reflect natural ecological patterns than traditional engineering techniques, while still accomplishing the program goals and objectives. Our designs are tightly integrated into the landscape design for a project, since many of the techniques rely on natural processes such as biofiltration, wetlands treatment, and rainwater re-use.

Sustainable and LEED® Experience
Nitsch Engineering has applied our knowledge of sustainable building as the civil engineer for several LEED® projects, including the LEED® Silver Stanley Elementary School in Waltham, the LEED® Certified Blue Cross Blue Shield office in North Quincy, the LEED® Registered MIT Stata Center and Brain and Cognitive Sciences buildings in Cambridge, and the LEED® Registered Harvard Northwest Labs in Cambridge. Nitsch Engineering has also completed award-winning work at the University of Virginia with respect to sustainable stormwater design, planning, and engineering on the 1,500-acre UVA campus.

In addition to providing sustainable design services as the civil engineer on a project, Nitsch Engineering provides site sustainability strategies as a consulting engineer.  In this capacity, Nitsch Engineering will work with an existing project team (including a local civil engineer of record) to implement sustainable site strategies.
